Weeks 9-10
How do sound and objects interact?
Watch this video on YouTube.
Now you’re the scientist! Get a pencil or chopstick & start gently testing objects around your house. Find 1 object that makes a loud sound, 1 object that makes a soft sound, & 1 object that absorbs all the sound (no sound at all).

Week 7
Where does sound come from?
Some important science words to review: Natural sources = come from nature Artificial sources = made by humans |
- Divide a paper in half. Walk around your house and your yard looking for sources of sound. On one side, write or draw natural sources of sound; on the other side, write or draw artificial sources of sound.
- Can you find or think of at least three of each kind? - If you're interested in learning more about sound sources, watch this video on YouTube. |

How does light interact with objects?
Watch this video on YouTube.
Now you’re the scientist! Look for one opaque object, one translucent object, one transparent object & one object with a shadow.
Use this sheet to track your observations! (Or make your own template.)

Weeks 4-7
Big Idea: Strong communities are the result of being connected to family and community and working together toward common goals.
Inquiry Question: How can you show appreciation for the roles and responsibilities of people in your family and in your community?
When you see the instructions “Draw a picture...” feel free to be creative with it! You could paint your picture or add texture to marker colouring by gluing on tissue paper, beads, feathers, etc. Maybe you have stamps or stencils you could use. Don’t limit yourself to pencil & paper!
*Career Activities will also be posted on Seesaw on a weekly basis.
*Keep all your work together by using a journal, making a book or creating a portfolio if you are not using Seesaw.
Week 4: April 27-May 1
Step 1) Draw a picture of your family that shows the jobs (roles and responsibilities) of each person.
Step 2) Draw a picture of what your family would be like if no one did their job.
Week 5: May 4-8
Step 3) Draw a picture of something you could do to say thank you (show appreciation) for people in your family.
Step 4) Now make your idea happen! Show your family that you are thankful for them. Use a drawing, note, photo or video to show yourself in action.
Week 6: May 11-15
Step 5) Draw a picture of your community that shows the important jobs of different people.
Step 6) Draw a picture of what your community would be like if no one did their job.

Earth Day Inquiry How does the community of Abbotsford take care of the environment?
*Medium to High Parent Involvement*
Divide a piece of paper in half. On one side draw or write your answer to Question 1. On the other side draw or write your answer to Question 2. Then start researching!
1) What do you already know?
Example: Recycling, compost, summer water saving, etc.
2) What do you want to know?
Examples: How do I know if I’m sorting my waste correctly? Find out in this video.
What happens to my recycling? Watch this video about what happens after collection.
Is drinking bottled water good for the earth? Find out in this video.
How do my electronics affect the environment? Understand what happens in this video.

Week 2
Sois un scientifique dans ton propre jardin! Be a scientist in your own backyard! If you don't have a backyard, you could do this activity with plants that are inside of your house or possibly go to a nearby park, without touching the playground, of course.
Look for answers to these questions:
- Comment peux-tu savoir que c'est le printemps et non pas l'hiver? How can you tell it is springtime and not winter?
- Est-ce que tu connais le nom de certaines plantes que tu vois? Do you know the names of any plants you see?
- Si oui, comment s'appellent-elles? If so, what are their names?
- Qu'est-que tu remarques quand tu regardes bien les plantes? What do you notice about the plants when you look closely?
Then share what you find:
- Record your observations on a sheet of paper like a real scientist would! Writing and/or drawing are both encouraged.
- Upload your scientific findings to Seesaw and record an explanation (en français) of what you found!
Keep an eye out:
- Mme Schulz will be posting a video of herself doing this activity at the end of the week! Here is Mme's video!
Extra resources to help with plant names:
- Native Plants Guide by the Fraser Valley Conservancy. There are lots of plant pictures with numbers on them that correspond to a list of names.
- 5 Popular Edible Berries & Plants in British Columbia. A few more pictures of plants that you might see on a hike or growing in your backyard.

Week 1
In keeping with the Easter theme...
Mystery Egg
Mystery Egg
What you need:
- Vinegar - Raw Egg - Cup What you do: With the help of an adult, put the egg carefully into the cup. Be careful not to break the egg! Fill the cup with vinegar until the egg is completely submerged. Next, let the cup with the egg and vinegar sit for 24 hours -- this experiment requires patience! After 24 hours, remove the egg from the cup. What are your observations? |
SPOILER ALERT: You'll notice the shell will rub off the egg. You can even wash it off under water until the egg is translucent. Examine the egg. You’ll notice that it feels rubbery (like a bouncy ball). What is left of the egg is the soft membrane. Now... lift the egg 1-2 inches in the air, let go and watch it bounce!
